How to Organize Your Home: Optimize Every Space with These Tips

Knowing how to organize your home isn't rocket science, but it might as well be if you're stuck procrastinating instead of motivating. That's exactly how I felt at first. I wanted my home clutter-free and organized, but I had no clue how to get there. And I'm not alone; over half of Americans (54%) state they're overwhelmed by clutter and wish they were more organized. That's a big number that I'm happy to say no longer includes me.

Until recently, I was in that camp, but a big move forced me to do something about it. I decluttered and reorganized every part of my home and learned a lot along the way. My goal now is to share this information with you so you can follow along with the steps I took to organize each area of your home.

You can go room-by-room to create a space that looks great, suits your needs, reduces stress, and cuts 40% of the time you spend on housework. And yes, you'll be getting rid of clutter (see more on that here) because it is a vital part of organizing. But it has major benefits, I promise you; decluttering is the key to reducing stress levels.

According to a study by the National Soap and Detergent Association:
"Getting rid of clutter can eliminate approximately 40% of housework, which can significantly reduce stress levels."

Ready to declutter and restructure your space? Good. Let's get you started.

Understanding the Impact of an Organized Home

Before you start, ask yourself why. Knowing this often helps when you're in the thick of it and wishing you had never started. We all know that feeling, and it's good to remind yourself why you started in the first place.

Maybe it's part of your New Year's resolution, or perhaps you're getting ready for guests, have family moving out, or, like me, you're downsizing and need to manage excess clutter. Whatever your reason, the end goal is an organized home that brings so many positive changes to your life, like these:

  • More efficient use of space
  • Less stress
  • Reduce housework by 40%
  • Get more done
  • Enhance overall well-being
  • Enjoy your home environment

Start With What Bothers You the Most

I found the easiest way to get started is to choose the area that bothers you the most. For me, it was my clothes and closet. I had gone from a large walk-in closet with custom shelving and cabinetry to a smaller closet that only had one rail. It was so frustrating. Not only because I couldn't fit everything in, but I had clothes all over the place and the stuff that made it to the closet was so cramped and badly organized, I couldn't find anything.

That was my breaking point and was when I started my decluttering and organizing mission.

Room-by-Room Transformation

The best way to get your home organized is to do it room-by-room. For that reason, this page has a different section for each room so you can follow along with the strategies that apply to each one.

Creating Your Serene Bedroom

Serene Organized Bedroom

Your bedroom should be a peaceful oasis, not a chaotic mess as mine was. You want to create zones in your bedroom for sleeping, dressing, hair and makeup, and maybe a chill area where you can meditate or read.

Start by sorting your nightstands. Pull everything out that doesn't belong there and use drawer dividers to keep your surfaces clear. Your bedroom has the added benefit of extra storage space under the bed. But, before you kick random items under there, yes, it's tempting, instead get a few underbed storage containers and organize your items neatly.

I prefer ones that have wheels and a transparent lid so I can a) pull them out easily to clean and b) see what's in there when I forget. When you've done all that, you can add some personal touches that make the room more "you."

Tackling Closet Clutter

Closets can become a catch-all for anything that doesn't have a home and can quickly become untidy. Don't let that put you off getting started; think of it as a good opportunity to create specific areas to store these homeless items. You'll be surprised at what you can turn this area into. I had so much more room when finished, I created a small memorabilia area to display my family wedding tiaras and other sentimental items. I don't know how I became the keeper of the tiaras, but here they were hiding at the back of my closet, so why not make them center stage.

Sentimental Items - Tiaras in Closet

I found the best way to organize your closet is to take everything out and think about how you can optimize your space before putting anything back. As always, declutter and get rid of as much as you can, then focus on maximizing your space with vertical shelving, double rails, drawers, and decorative bins. I share with you what worked for me here.

On this page, you'll learn how to sort your clothes into categories and group similar items together so it makes sense. You'll use drawer dividers and bins for smaller items and rotate seasonal items to free up space.
