I've moved many times in my life including two big international moves (USA to UK and back again). Believe me, I had to do a lot of decluttering before those moves and have developed my own strategies and tips that really worked.

You would think that after these moves I learned to keep my stuff to a minimum. Nope, I managed to build it all up again, just in time for my next big move into semi-retirement. This time we downsized from a big house in Pennsylvania to a much smaller house in Florida - that had no basement and very limited storage. It was through this that I fine-tuned my clutter-free life and finally became organized enough to stay that way.

How to Declutter Your Home

Okay, let's be real for a sec, tackling a whole house full of stuff can feel totally overwhelming, right? But what if I told you it doesn't have to be that way? Let's break it down and declutter room by room. Maybe you already know the room you want to start with. If that's the case, then read no more and start there, I have a guide for each room.

Otherwise, we'll start with those clutter hotspots we all have (you know, like that kitchen counter that seems to attract everything)! We'll then move on to the bedroom, that overflowing closet, and even conquer the living room. And yes, I'll even share some gentle tips on how to deal with those sentimental items that can be tough to let go of.

Sentimental items that are hard to part with

I found decluttering sentimental items incredibly challenging. Unfortunately, I experienced this firsthand when I had to clear my sister's home after her sudden death at just 38 years old.

Sadly it was something I had to repeat years later with my parents' home after they passed.

So, trust me, I know how difficult and emotional letting go of sentimental items can be.

Their belongings are cherished but we have to let go to move forward. Surprisingly, it can be quite therapeutic. I have shared the strategies that helped me, along with some tips for preserving the memories of your loved ones in meaningful ways.

How About Starting With a Declutter Challenge?

We all love a bit of a challenge, and there are plenty out there to choose from. I've tried them all and provided my own feedback on how each one compares, together with the reasons why. These mini-challenges can make decluttering fun and maybe even a little addictive. (It's true, it can be!) Think of it like a game you can win, one sock drawer or countertop at a time.

The challenges I've tried cater to every schedule and commitment level. From a quick one-hour declutter to a daily challenge, and even epic 30-day and 52-week declutter journeys!

Now You've decluttered, What About How to Organize Your Home?

If you'd like to open a drawer and find everything exactly where it should be, then this part will be your friend. Getting organized is your reward for all your hard work in decluttering. Learning how to organize your home can be life-changing. It's about creating a space that's both functional and peaceful.
